Happy Gotcha Day MEILYNN!!!

I can't believe it was 3 years ago already that this beautiful, terrified princess walked into the Civil Affairs building.

She tripped and fell on the threshold and our hearts broke into a million pieces as we held back the urge to run over and pick her up and hug her.  You are not supposed to "meet" the child until certain customary introductions are done.  So, we watched as she was escorted behind a curtain.  We caught her peeking pensively around the curtain a few times.  Poor girl didn't know what to expect.  She had been shown our pictures in a photo book we sent her and had been told she would be getting a mama and baba today.  What does that mean to a sweet child who experienced 4 other families, ones that didn't last?  What does permanent and forever mean to her?

We celebrated the Christmas season in China (one of my favorite memories).

We watched as she began to accept our love.

We celebrate this precious blessing!  She is more than we ever could have imagined!  She is kind, smart, compassionate, and a hard-worker.  She has faced adversity with a smile and strong-spirit.  We look forward to seeing how God will use her.  We thank Him for the opportunity to teach her what a Forever Family is!!  So happy to have had the last 3 years with this special gift!!

Wow! What a Busy Season!

We have had so much going on this season, lots of fun activities.  Meilynn was one of the lead roles in our church Christmas pagent.  She did an amazing job of learning her lines!  Jayson and Kaitlyn were also in it.  Everyone did a terrific job.  It was a very fun performance.

Jayson had a second grade musical performance.  He did a great job also!

Grandma and Grandpa took the Littles to see Santa!

We took time to visit Bronner's and buy our yearly Christmas ornaments.  We also drove around looking at lights and visited the Toledo Zoo for their Festival of Lights.  We are members, so parking and admission were free!  It did start raining at the end, so we left a little bit before we saw everything.  However, the kiddos had fun and enjoyed seeing the lights.

By far, the kiddos' favorite part of the festivities were the gifts!!

Ramblings About Our Son

We had a chance to request an update when we received Pre-Approval for our son back in July.  I feel like I know this little guy so well, that the information didn't seem "new" to me.  I advocated for him for months and poured over every ounce of information and video of him that I could get my hands on.  I think my brain is still processing through all of this and the fact that he really is MY son.  I don't think it will really sink in until I am on a plane to China once again and realize that he is at the end of this amazing journey!

Here are answers to some of the questions we asked:
Does he get along well with other children?  He gets along very well with other kids
What does he like to play with? Building blocks, puzzles, and assembled toys
What are his favorite activities? Outdoor activities and playing games with his friends
When he becomes upset, what do you do to calm him down?  Play toys with him together and talk with him
How would you describe his personality?  Very cheerful, lively, likes to laugh
What is your favorite thing about him?  He loves to imitate others' actions and act

It always amazes at how God puts families together!  I could not have asked for more perfect "fits" into our family dynamic.  We are so blessed by the beautiful children that God has given us the opportunity to raise!  Now, you must understand, in order to survive in this household you need a little mischievous side.  Check out his video below to see his right at the end!  Watch his smile as he decides how he would like to present his artwork. :)  Yup, he's an Anderson alright!!

DTC!!

Our official paperwork has been sent to China!

It took longer than expected.  We found out December 11th that our paperwork was processed and ready to go to China.  They would try either Friday or Monday to upload it to the CCCWA (Chinese governmental agency in charge of all adoptions) database.  I was so excited, we were so close!  I waited patiently (okay, maybe not) to hear the news that I could post we were DTC (Dossier To China).  We didn't hear anything on Friday.  Monday passed with no news either, I decided to email to find out if we were official.  We received a reply that our agency was unable to upload it to the database.  I was so disappointed.  We found out that Tuesday the same problem occurred, however, they would try Wednesday and send our paperwork on and continue to try.  Wednesday, came and went.  Our paperwork was sent, but we would not be official until uploaded.  I put out pleas for prayer.  Friday, I decided to inquire again.  Prayer worked!!  We had actually been uploaded on Thursday and the email never came through letting us know this!  :)  We don't start our "official wait" until we have a LID (Logged In Date), but I will take this small success!  It usually takes 3-4 weeks to get a LID, but I have seen some record fast ones lately.  The CCCWA has a software update December 28 - January 4, so no paperwork will be processed that week.  Praying somehow we sneak in a LID before this update, but regardless, celebrating where we are at!! :)

Taking a Moment for a Blessing Inventory!

I am always surprised at how God provides!  There are so many families that have stepped up to help in big and small ways.  I so appreciate it!  This is just one way that God reminds me to stop worrying, He will provide for all of our needs.  Here are a few recent examples.

A few weeks ago a family from church decided to clean out their closets.  They have 3 boys that are Brayden’s age and older.  They asked if we would like the clothes that their boys have outgrown.  YES!!  We can always use a little boost to the wardrobe (especially for the boys, they tend to be a bit rougher on clothes).  J  When I went to my car to transfer the goods, I thought maybe there would be a few things, but my trunk was filled with 2 HUGE boxes and one more had to ride home on the front seat.  That evening, Mark and I started unpacking the boxes.  My eyes welled up, the boxes were filled with clothes in great condition (some with tags still on).  Brayden and Jayson have found sweatshirts to wear.  They love getting new stuff and some of it is even Michigan State!  There are shorts and shirts that I can take with us for our new son this summer.  Words cannot express my gratitude.

A little over a month ago, Mark and I talked about adoption in the church service.  One of the moms in the church approached me afterwards.  She remembered me saying that I could always have more kids if I could just get more bunkbeds.  They had a bunkbed they were trying to get rid of.  She wondered if I would be interested?!  YES!!  We had just been talking about needing to get another bunkbed and wondering how we would afford one.  I have seen pictures, this is a nice bunkbed!  All the children will have a place to sleep now!

A teacher friend at school was cleaning out her closets.  She has a son and he recently moved into a full bed.  She realized that they had a bunch of twin sheet sets that didn’t fit any beds in their house.  Would I be interested?  YES!!  Imagine if you will trying to keep up with 6 (soon to be 8) twin beds.  Sometimes the laundry doesn’t get done in a single day.  Sometimes the Littles’ sheets get “dirty”.  :-/  There just aren’t enough sheets around here.  While she was cleaning out the closet she stumbled on some coats and snowpants.  They are wonderful coats AND just the size Ryan will need this year and next!

Folks, God provides!!  When we don’t expect it and when we forget to ask… He will take care of us.
Our Biggest Blessings!!

Our Family's Story and My Heart's Cry

I have been thinking about this song for a month.  Pictures and thoughts run through my head every time I listen to it.  This was my first attempt at a video, but I needed to get my feelings out where I could share them.  If I had unlimited ability this would have been so much more.  However, it still expresses my heart's cry and unyielding passion for adoption!

Please watch and enjoy!!  Click here for video.

US Approval and an Update on Kristyn!! :)

What a Monday!!  I usually don't get very excited about Mondays, but this one turned out to be a GREAT day!!

We received our i800a approval over the weekend.  This approval means that our paperwork can be authenticated.  What does this mean?  In about 3 weeks, our paperwork will FINALLY be on it's way to CHINA!!!  I mailed our paperwork to our agency on Friday afternoon.  The approval came on Saturday.  Our paperwork arrived at our agency in Alabama TODAY!  Our social worker already got started on the authentication process.  I know... too many exclamation points, I am just so excited.  It seemed that it couldn't get any better, but it did!

We received a second email that we had an update on our sweet Kristyn!  We had asked a few questions only 10 days ago and received answers today.  I told you it was a fantastic Monday!  There weren't any pictures sent this time, but I love reading the responses to our questions.  I think I have them memorized!

I will share some of the highlights with you.  (These are direct quotes, so excuse the choppy English.)

"She is an outgoing and happy girl.  She gets along with other children very well.  She is always sweet and likes to share.  She likes to play games with other children.  She likes sports, especially likes to run.  She is not a picky eater.  She likes everything except spicy food.  She attends school, is in first grade, and can do all the math for first grade children.  My favorite thing about Kristyn is she is a very happy and active child.  She also studies hard.  She is always very excited to learn new things.  She likes to read and enjoys reading different books.  She also has a very well imagination.  She only wears a brace on one leg, has therapy once a week and acupuncture."

Can you stand it?!?!  Does she not sound like the perfect child for our family!!  Okay, this makes the waiting WAY WORSE!!  I can't wait to squeeze this precious child and bring her home!  My favorite part is that she likes to run.  She has cerebral palsy and it sounds like she is doing really well.  We are so excited!  Please pray for a speedy process, I think this will be the worst wait yet.  Of course, I always say that, but this will be the longest that I've stared at my kiddos' faces before I could go and bring them home.

Here's a picture of our sweet daughter when she was about 4 years old.

Journey to Kristyn

I knew when we started this next adoption that I was going to move mountains to bring home another daughter as well.  However, I figured this was metaphorical and I would only have to convince Mark.  I was wrong; it has been a roller coaster ride and hard work, but SO WORTH IT!!

After we got PA for our son, we began to turn our attention to getting our homestudy written.  I casually mentioned to our social worker that I intended to write it for 2 “just in case” the Lord led us to bring another child home as well.  I, of course, knew the Lord intended for me to bring another one home… doesn’t He always. (Please note the intended sarcasm here.  I was praying like crazy that God wanted this.)  Mark didn’t seem too reluctant to have the wording in there, understanding that it was an “if and only if” plan.  (Again, one should always be completely truthful with their spouse, but I knew if I could get the ball rolling…)  To my surprise, the program had changed a bit in the year and a half since we got Addi and Ryan.  Our agency no longer encouraged, and actually discouraged adopting two children simultaneously.  Our social worker had to get her supervisor to sign off on allowing us to write our homestudy for two kiddos, and even then this was not a guarantee that we would be approved for being matched with two children.

We were given approval to write our homestudy for two and some paperwork to sign and I took that as a victory.  I guess I didn’t think too much about the paperwork stating that this did NOT approve us for being matched with two.  I kept using phrases like “IF we decide…” and “IF the Lord brings…”.  Then, I set to work convincing Mark of how we needed another kiddo, no easy task mind you.  I love when he turns to our kids for support; they have my heart for adoption.  I’m not sure why he always assumes there will be a point where we will decide we have enough kids.  I think we missed that train about 3 stations ago! ;)  Mark decided it would be harmless just to request a few files.  We were stunned to get back a response that we were not approved to be matched for two and therefore couldn’t request files.  However, if we wanted to pursue that path, there was another mountain to traverse.

More paperwork (A LOT MORE) would need to be filled out and questions would need to be answered by each of us about the process of bonding with two new kiddos in China and at home.  We were so determined that they see our hearts that we even wrote a letter (A LONG ONE) detailing all of our experiences and our hearts for these kiddos and why we really felt God was drawing us to bringing home two.  Our social worker was very clear from the very beginning (and I appreciate the honesty, though it is hard to hear), very few families are approved for two, our agency does not offer this to anyone, and previous successes does not give you a “leg up” in the decision.  The China Team would receive our paperwork, pray, discuss, meet, and decide.  This process takes 1-2 weeks.

I was a nervous wreck and at the close of the first week, when no decision was made yet, Mark started getting concerned too.  Then came the end of the second week, still no decision.  Now, we began to question what it meant… Was it a good thing, were they really taking their time with our letter and request?  Were they simply trying to figure out a way to let us down gently?  We became slightly paranoid, especially by the end of the third week.  The Team had unexpected trips, orphanage visits, etc come up, so the decision turned into a grueling FOUR weeks!!

I wish I could have taped the phone call I finally received on Friday evening of the fourth week from my social worker.  She said a decision had been reached and we would discuss what it meant on Monday, but she couldn’t let me go the whole weekend without knowing that we were APPROVED FOR TWO!!!  I know I absolutely squealed!!  Mark had prayed yet again (you would think he would stop throwing out fleeces!!) that if we were approved for two, he would know God wanted us to go for two.  He told me this just after I hung up the phone.  My poor neighbors, I squealed again only louder!!

We discovered that our agency would need to approve any files that we were going to review before they would be sent to us.  So, we requested 3 files… and waited.  I watched the videos of the three girls, listed by our agency, over and over.  I was slowly falling in love with the youngest of the three.  My mama heart knew that we were at the end of our adoption journeys.  My “adoptological clock” was ticking and I wanted another young one.  We received the first file of a sweet little 6.5 year old girl.  It was an amazing file.  She was a precious little girl with good mobility, good all-around development, and had Mark’s birthday (not to mention she was ADORABLE)!  Mark was ready to sign on the dotted line!  I kept hearing the loud ticking of that “adoptological clock” in my ear!  I wanted to wait to see the other files.  One of the little ones already had a family interested and filling out paperwork for her.  But, there was still that little 3 year old…  Finally her paperwork came.  I knew that she would be the one.  Then I read her file with Mark and we realized that our family was not the right place for her.  Time to re-evaluate my clock and take stock of what I have… two precious little 3 year olds that do NOT need another young sibling.  Addisyn is so well bonded and had such a rocky start with her delays, that this will be tough enough for her.  Okay, we needed to revisit the first file.  She is adorable.  I began to watch her videos over and over and over.  I began to notice her beautiful smile and her cute little voice.  I began to realize that I could parent 4 seven year olds. :-/

We decided to put her on hold, but first we needed to ask the kiddos if this was their sister.  Mark got a resounding yes and lots of thumbs up! :)  We called our social worker to put her on hold and began to fill out the Letter of Intent (LOI) to request China to assign her file to our family.  We submitted LOI on October 24th.  Our social worker let us know that it had been taking as long as 4 weeks for a second PA to come.  PA is pre-approval letting us know that China has saved this child’s file for our family.  It also means that we get to share our wonderful news!  As we finished out the first week of waiting, we had our fingerprint appointment!  Oh how I hoped it would come on this day, but I knew that would not happen.  When we approached the end of this week, we realized that the CCCWA (Chinese adoption offices) would be closed until the end of next week.  Our PA would most likely be delayed.  The offices closed on November 7th (which would be our 6th), so when the morning of the 6th came and went (with no call or email), I knew it would be another week or two. :(  I had a meeting after school, but Mark texted letting me know he had something to share and a different suggestion for dinner.  After the meeting, I called and found out that our social worker had called him in the afternoon and WE HAD PA!!!  They must have signed it and sent it out before they turned off the lights in the office at CCCWA!  We decided to change dinner plans, get Pizza Hut, and let the kiddos stay up late and celebrate!!  Then, of course, Mark and I had to stay up WAY LATER to put together a special announcement video cause this little girl is sooo worth it!!

Biometric Appointment!! :)

We received our fingerprint notice in the mail on Thursday!!  Guess what?  It was for next Friday, October 31st!! Can you believe it?  How awesome is that?  Now, I am hearing that it is taking a REALLY long time for some officer assignments, as in 75 days just to be assigned an officer in some cases.  :(  This would mean redoing all of our time sensitive paperwork (medicals, clearances, etc) before sending our dossier to China, which is the next step.  I am praying we get put into the "speedy" line!   Maybe... if it's not asking to much... that we get our same officer... :)

Waiting on US Approval

We received our Letter of Receipt from the USCIS - Homeland Security.  They send a letter informing you that they did receive your paperwork and payment.  We still need to wait for the actual biometrics (electronic fingerprints) appointment.  We are hopeful that it will come next week.  They usually schedule a month out, so most likely not until mid to late November.  Then, you wait to get an officer and wait for that officer to approve your application.   This approvals lets us know that the US will allow us to adopt a child internationally.  After this step, our paperwork can be sent to China and we begin the BIG wait for approval for official matching with our son.  Every step takes so much longer than I want it to.  But, I know there is a bigger plan that I do not see.  I am trusting in God's timing.  I am thankful to be at this step.  Unfortunately, my fingerprints are horrible.  I always get anxious when this appointment ends up falling during cold weather.  Time to start using lotions and wearing gloves. :)

He is sooooo worth it!!  (This video is quite a few years old, but he is just so cute!  I adore that I have these gifts of early glimpses.  God is so good!!)

SLOW and Steady... A Bit Too Much SLOW

Oh the paperwork...  Still plodding along with the paperwork.  Our homestudy has been finished, but needed to be approved by 3 or 4 different people.  Then, the officer manager (who usually mails out the copies) had a family situation that meant she was out of the office for awhile.  So, we wait.  Our copy of the homestudy arrived at our house on Friday, but the other copies (that really count) have to make it to Alabama.  All of the rest of our i800a paperwork is ready and waiting at Lifeline's office.  As soon as they receive our homestudy, it's off to the next wait (for US initial approval).

Our next appointment will be for fingerprints.  These are the big fancy ones that they do at the USCIS office in Grand Rapids.  The problem is my fingerprints are HORRIBLE!  I wear gloves and lotion up with special lotions for months in advance.  And guess what... it's starting to get cold out!  Oh great!  That means dry hands and really bad results.  Really praying that all of this speeds along!

I know that it is all in God's timing.   I do rest in the fact that He has a MUCH better plan than I do!  I know my timelines make Him laugh.  But really... who could blame me?  Wouldn't you want to get to this as soon as possible?!?!

Our Sweet Performer

This boy is so ready to perform.

He is such a peanut, so tiny compared to those other kiddos.  But, he is so focused and determined to perform every motion correctly! :)

My mama heart can't wait to sit in church beaming during a King's Kids performance knowing this sweet little boy is OURS!  He is the sweetie second from the right side of the screen in brown pants and red shirt.

4 Years Ago We Experienced Our First Gotcha Day

It was Sunday (September 19, 2010) afternoon in Nanjing, China.  We were so incredibly nervous.  We were about to meet the little girl that we had only known from paperwork and a few pictures that were taken when she was about 9 months old.  Kaitlyn was now almost 3 years old.

We entered the Civil Affairs building, where children sat waiting for their parents.  We didn't see any familiar looking faces and parents were quickly united with their kiddos.  Our traveling buddies found their beautiful little girl.  We continued to wait and the nerves only increased.  Then, her nanny walked through the door.  We immediately recognized that round beautiful face and gorgeous brown eyes!  Her nanny even smiled, recognizing us from the photo book we had sent.  Kaitlyn let me feed her Puffs, touch her head and back, and even change her diaper (while her nanny watched from close by).

The nanny slipped away when Kaitlyn wasn't looking.  Then, it happened... She noticed...

Yup, this girl had a set of lungs!!  That lollipop you see, ended up in my hair.  I was kicked, hit, and bit.  The Civil Affairs office was being remodeled and her screams echoed throughout the building for the next 30 minutes.  When we finally left the building she settled in, gave up, and relaxed.  By the end of the day she was interacting and laughing with us.  She still had plenty of tantrums, but we had lots of amazing moments and precious memories!  She loved to play, interact, and mimic us.

When we came home, she quickly figured out how to hold her own around her brothers.

We discovered the amazing transformations that happen when God knits your family together.  The pieces just fit, as if they were an entire puzzle designed to be together from the beginning.

This girl continues to amaze us!  She is kind, loving, funny, and even-tempered.  We are so in love with her and she opened up a world to us that forever changed our hearts!  We love you Kaitlyn Qingyan Anderson!!

Boys, Boys, So Many Boys!

How did we get boys from China?  I get asked this question a LOT!  Few people are aware that most of the kiddos waiting for a family in China are boys.  Orphanages are filled with a majority of these amazing, adorable little guys.  Many of them have very minor needs, but they wait because of their gender.  Can you believe this sweet little one waited for over 5 years?  He was available for adoption at 2 years old.

Yes, I know, they don't always choose the best clothes.  But, look at that adorable face.  He was passed over for 5 years!  I am SO THANKFUL that we get to call him SON!  Can't wait to squeeze him and see those dimples in real life!

Please consider adoption and pray for all of those sweet boys still waiting!
